Exploring the Beautiful Coats of Smooth and Rough Chow Chows

Chow Chows, with their regal and dignified presence, are instantly recognizable by their luxurious coats. One of the distinguishing features of this breed is the variation in their coats, which come in two types: rough and smooth. Let's take a closer look at the characteristics of each coat type and what sets them apart.

Rough Coat:

In the rough coat variety, the outer coat is abundant, dense, straight, and stands off from the body. It has a rather coarse texture, while the undercoat is soft, thick, and wooly. When Chow Chows are puppies, their coat is soft, thick, and wooly all over. One of the notable features of the rough coat is the profuse ruff that frames the head and neck, adding to the breed's majestic appearance. It's important to note that the rough coat tends to be longer in males compared to females. The length of the coat can vary significantly among individual Chows, but it's the thickness, texture, and overall condition that should be given more emphasis than length. It is generally considered undesirable to excessively trim or shape the coat. Optional trimming can be done on the whiskers, feet, and metatarsals to maintain a tidy appearance.

Smooth Coat:

The smooth coated Chow Chows are evaluated based on the same breed standard as the rough coated variety, with some notable differences. Unlike the rough coat, the smooth coat lacks the long outer coat and ruff. Instead, it features a hard, dense hair, and smooth under coat. The smooth coat Chow Chows do not have obvious feathering on their legs or tail. The absence of the ruff and feathering gives them a sleek and polished appearance.

Whether you prefer the majestic allure of the rough coat or the streamlined elegance of the smooth coat, both varieties of Chow Chows possess a double coat that provides them with insulation and protection from various weather conditions. Their coats require regular grooming to maintain their health and appearance. Regular brushing helps to remove loose hair and prevent matting. Bathing should be done as needed, ensuring the use of appropriate dog-friendly products.

It's important to note that the coat type is not the sole factor that defines the Chow Chow breed. Regardless of the coat variety, Chow Chows are known for their calm and dignified temperament, loyalty to their families, and their overall elegance.

Whether you're captivated by the luxurious and abundant coat of the rough Chow Chow or the sleek and polished appearance of the smooth Chow Chow, both varieties offer their unique charm and beauty. Whichever coat type you choose, you can expect a devoted and magnificent companion that will bring joy and admiration to your home.
